Health Careers & Workforce Diversity
AHECs are committed to expanding the health care workforce, including maximizing
diversity and facilitating distribution, especially in underserved communities.
To achieve this goal, AHECs offer the creative, hand-on Summer Health Careers
Institute, mathematics and science enrichment programs and healthy lifestyles
programs for elementary, middle school and high school students. These programs
introduce students to a wide assortment of health careers possibilities, guide
them in goal setting and educational planning, and offer science courses that
strengthen crucial thinking skills. Working with schools, colleges and community
partners, AHECs target both economically disadvantaged students and those from
underrepresented minority groups in school programs and summer institutes.
- The online Colorado Health Careers Guide receives 84,000 hits per year:
http://www.coloradohealthcareers.org/
- Annually, over 50,000 students ranging from kindergarten through college
were introduced to health careers through programs or resources deliver by or
sponsored by AHECs
- Last year, over 2,000 high school students completed health careers or
academic enhancement programs such as the Summer Health Careers Institute, the
Denver Metropolitan Regional Science and Engineering Fair, Health Career
