The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) posted on its website lists of zip codes eligible for payment of the Physician Scarcity Area (PSA) bonus payment and the Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) bonus payment. This information, along with a Medlearn Matters article for physicians about the two programs, can be accessed at www.cms.hhs.gov/providers/bonuspayment.

The posting of this site serves as part of the implementation of section 413 of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA). Section 413 created the PSA bonus program, which pays an additional 5 percent for services furnished in Physician Scarcity Areas, starting January 1, 2005. In addition, section 413 of the MMA modified the existing HPSA bonus program, which pays an additional 10 percent for services furnished in Health Professional Shortage Areas. These modifications also go into effect January 1, 2005.
