Colorado Nurse Alert System

Opportunities for Nurses: Volunteer Disaster Response

Since the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, many nurses have expressed interest in participating in disaster response activities. Eight organizations in Colorado are working together to develop a new system, which will maximize the potential impact that nurses can bring to disaster relief and emergency response anywhere in the State. It is called the Colorado Nurse Alert System (CNAS).

The partner organizations are the:

The purpose of the CNAS is to identify and mobilize currently licenses nurses who have the necessary nursing skills to serve as volunteers during times of disaster and emergency in Colorado. The goal is to assure adequate and appropriate nurse staffing for the disaster relief efforts, which may be needed throughout Colorado. This includes staffing for the congregate (general population) shelters, as well as the special needs shelters (people who are not well enough for the congregate shelters, but may not be able to go to a hospital). This new system could be activated if and when there is a need for a mass vaccination campaign statewide, a need to treat victims of terrorism, as well as during a response to floods and other natural disasters.

The part time, inactive licensed, and retired nurses in Colorado will be encouraged to volunteer in addition to the full time employed. Nurses who choose to volunteer and be involved in this type of activity should be aware of their current employee rights and responsibilities as well as those of their employers. This system will be integrated with the American Red Cross as well as the Medical Reserve Corps. Volunteer registration forms can be downloaded here; also they will be mailed to all registered nurses and licensed practical nurses in Colorado before the end of the year.

Additional information about registering can be obtained in the September 2002 issue of The Colorado Nurse or by calling the Department of Public Health and Environment’s Office of Local Liaison at (303) 692-2350.
