Session 4-Urban Resources

Issue #1

Workplace Environment (professional image)

Objectives

A. Leaders conduct assessment of job satisfaction

B. Raise awareness and sensitivity regarding respect toward co-workers

C. Empower workers for decision-making

Action Plans/Pilot Projects/Key Persons/Timeframes

A. Implement measurement tools for job satisfaction. Colleen Goode to share information on the tools used at Univ of Colorado Hospital.

B. Training on sensitivity to co-workers

C. Provide leadership and management training for immediate supervisors (for example, professional development). Give talented people enriching and challenging jobs. Try to hook people into a growth path.

These all can be implemented for relatively low cost.

Pilot Projects

Hospital and long-term care makes transition from education to work less stressful by providing internships and residency programs. Suggest legislative reimbursement for these programs.

Legislation for loan forgiveness for those going into healthcare professions

Re-entry programs for nurses who have been out of the profession.

Tuition program for entry-level workers; promote “growing your own”

System Alignment

Objectives
A. Reconfigure collaborative relations of industry, educ, and govt to better address workforce issues.

celebrate collaborative areas that work and strengthen them, such as academic clinical education and service partners for nurses and allied health.

Pilot project – annual acknowledgement of academic, clinical, service partnership that demonstrate positive attitude about clinical education by an external group.

Key persons

– CHA, AARP, other consumer advocacy groups.

Systems alignment and Collaborative Partnerships

Objectives

A. Reconfigure collaborative relations of industry/education/government to better address Health workforce in system-wide manner

Action Plans/Pilot Projects/Key Persons/Timeframes

Celebrate collaboration areas that work and strengthen these, such as academic clinical education/services, e.g. nursing, allied health

Make system-wide collaborative model for securing clinical sites instead of competitive model.

Create a centralized admission clearinghouse—alignment across all higher education (match applicants with program openings).

Allow flow of applicants—rural and urban—and vice versa

Development of diversity/underprivileged/underemployed in health workforce.
Colorado Health and Hospitals and Consumer Advocacy groups, Fall 2002 recognition

Alliance of Colorado Educators, AHEC, Center for Nursing Excellence, with Allied Health representation.

Denver metro area first, CCD, ACC, FRCC Westminster, UOP, UCHSC, Regis, CSU , by 2003.

Support incentives for rural community colleges and higher education program applicants for an urban location and/or use of technology for support.

Actively recruit denver high school students to enroll through PSEO in CCD programs and serve clinical experience at Denver Health. MOWD provides scholarships

Timeline –

Jan 15, Meeting and MOU between DPS/CCD/Denver Health/MOWD.

Resource development; marketing and recruitment campaign.

Inforamtion dissemination to high schools by April 15.
