About Us:

The Polycystic Kidney Research Group at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center has been expanding the knowledge of Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) since 1984. Dr. Robert Schrier's original idea was to contact the families with PKD that had been identified by Dr. Joseph Holmes, a pioneer in the use of ultrasound (originally SONAR, developed during World War II). Dr. Holmes realized that ultrasound would be a useful diagnostic tool for PKD, a disease first described in the early 1900's but seldom studied. Since 1984 there has been an explosion of research on PKD, and the PKD Group has contributed by studying the natural history of PKD, the role of high blood pressure in PKD, PKD's effects on the liver, and many other studies reported in over 115 articles and book chapters. We have a database of over one thousand people with PKD who have participated in our studies and many more who are hoping for a chance to participate in future studies. With the new knowledge of the genetics of PKD, a cure for PKD is closer than ever.

This disease can be conquered!
