BS Program Admission Requirements
All applicants are considered competitively. Several factors are considered in selecting applicants, including academic achievement, motivation for nursing as a career, experiences with people from diverse groups and life experiences.
1. Applicant must complete a minimum of 60 semester or 90 quarter hours of transferable course work, including the prerequisite course work. Each prerequisite course must be completed with a minimum grade of C (2.0) in each course. (See section on Prerequisite Course Work.)
2. Applicant will be considered for admission provided an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 or better has been attained in all college-level work completed.
3. All prerequisites must be completed by the Spring semester (or Winter quarter) prior to the requested admit term. For applicants without a previous bachelor’s degree, during that final Spring semester (or winter quarter), a maximum of 16 semester credits (11 quarter credits) may be taken. Of these 16 semester credits (11 quarter credits), only 1 course can be from anatomy, physiology, and microbiology. For applicants with a bachelor’s degree posted by the final Fall semester/quarter, only 2 prerequisites may be taken. Statistics and 1 course from anatomy, physiology, and microbiology.
4. Applicant must complete an essay question.
5. Course work from vocational/technical schools will not be accepted.
Additional Requirements for International Students
International applicants are encouraged to begin the application process one year prior to their requested admission term. In addition to the above admission requirements, international applicants must submit:
1. Financial Statement for International Applicants
2. Minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper), 213 (computer version) or 80 (internet version) for applicants whose first language is not English
3. A copy of the passport
Permanent Resident students are not considered international students. A copy of Permanent Resident card is required.
Transfer of College-Level Credit for Admission Purposes
In general, transfer credits from accredited post-secondary institutions will be accepted if they meet the degree, grade, and residence requirements of the student’s chosen program of study at the University. College level credit may be transferred to the University of Colorado if:
1. It has been earned at an accredited college or university. Some courses are accepted from Advanced Placement, CLEP and International Baccalaureate program.
2. A grade of C or better has been attained.
3. The credit is for courses appropriate to the degree sought at this institution.
4. It is not vocational-technical coursework.
5. It is not remedial course work.
Credit for Advanced Placement
Advanced placement scores may be accepted. Official transcripts must be sent from the testing service directly to the College of Nursing.
Pass/Fail Credit
Prerequisite courses taken for pass/fail credit will not be accepted. No more than 6 semester credit hours of pass credit will be considered for the additional course work required to complete the 60 semester credit hours. The grade of P will be accepted provided the grade of P is equivalent to C (not C-) or better and is so indicated on the transcript.
Correspondence, Extension, CLEP and DANTES Credit
A maximum of 30 semester hours of correspondence, extension, subject CLEP (College Level Examination Program), and/or DANTES (Department of Defense Activity for Nontraditional Education Support) credit may count toward the degree. General CLEP will not receive credit. Correspondence and extension credit must meet the guidelines for transfer of college level credit and are subject to review. College credit for CLEP examinations may also be considered to meet prerequisites provided the scores are at the 67th percentile or above. College credit for DANTES
examination may be considered to meet prerequisites. ACT/PEP exams (exclusive of 5 nursing challenge exams) may be taken to meet prerequisites but will receive no credit; the applicant must complete the 60 hours of college credit to qualify for admission.
Transfer Admission from another Baccalaureate Nursing Program
Any applicant applying to transfer to the University of Colorado College of Nursing from another baccalaureate nursing program must meet all requirements for admission to the College of Nursing. Generally only upper division nursing courses from an NLN accredited baccalaureate College of Nursing will be considered for transfer into the College of Nursing. Advanced standing is determined on an individual basis and is not decided until an evaluation of all previous academic work has been completed. To facilitate the faculty’s evaluation of nursing courses taken at other institutions, the transfer applicant must submit official course descriptions of all nursing courses with the formal application and transcripts to the College of Nursing. No pass/fail nursing courses will be accepted. Applicants must be competitive with the most recent entering class. Acceptance of transfer students is always contingent on available space.
Additional Information
1. Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification is required by the beginning of the Fall semester. Certification must be from the American Heart Association, Health Care Provider Certificate.
2. The Hepatitis B vaccination series must be completed prior to the first clinical course.
3. Students must be enrolled in residence at the College of Nursing for the last 30 semester hours of credit to be awarded the Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of Colorado.

MS Program Admission Requirements
- Completion of all requested application materials
- A baccalaureate degree with an upper division major in nursing, an entry level doctor of nursing, or a generic master’s degree in nursing from an NLN or CCNE accredited program
- A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all previous coursework.
- A preferred GRE (Graduate Record Examination-www.gre.org) score of 883.5 with a score of at least 400 in the verbal and quantitative sections and 3.5 in the analytical section of the exam. The GRE must be within 10 years or will need to be repeated.
- Completion of an elementary statistics course with a grade of C or better
- Completion of an undergraduate research course with a grade of C or better
- Current RN licensure in Colorado required. Distance only, online Public Health, Health Systems Leadership and Health Care Informatics options applicants, please inquire about current policy.
- A minimum TOEFL score of 213 for applicants whose first language is not English
Applicants whose academic record contains a large number of pass-fail credits must submit suitable additional evidence that they possess the required scholastic ability.
All students will be required to have a personal computer and Internet access. Part of this expense may be covered by Financial Aid.
No nursing practice experience is required for application for admission. Nursing practice is recommended; however, prior to advanced clinical practicum courses.
Applicants may take courses toward the MS degree prior to admission as a non-degree student. Up to 12 credits may be taken at CU-CON or from another university as a non-degree student. Completion of courses does not guarantee acceptance into the program.
