Thank you for considering the University of Colorado Denver (UC Denver) College of Nursing for your continued professional development. The Office of Professional Development and Extended Studies (OPDES) at UC Denver College of Nursing is a Colorado Commission on Higher Education (CCHE) statewide extended campus site offering special topics courses, programs, and certificates to non-degree seeking students who want to work on a degree; learn something new; or improve their professional skills.
OPDES provides professional development opportunities which include transferable academic credit courses. Participants register at the university as non-degree seeking students; they earn a letter grade, and their academic record is tracked with the UC Denver Office of the Registrar. Students may transfer up to 12 credit hours into a masters degree program should they decide to become an admitted student. Non-degree course work is available each semester through a variety of formats including the Internet, interactive video, intensive conferences, and the traditional classroom.
Are you interested in “trying out” graduate education? We have several program offerings each semester that may be transferable into our graduate programs. Your registration as a non-degree seeking student will be held until all currently enrolled graduate students are registered. Registration for these classes is on a first-come-first-serve basis and students ALREADY enrolled in degree seeking programs at UC Denver are registered first. If you wish to have TOP priority when registering, we strongly suggest that you apply to the UC Denver graduate program. You are welcome to contact the College of Nursing Admissions Office/Office of Student Services and Diversity.
OPDES also offers several Graduate Certificate Programs , including a: Clinical Educator Certificate, Healthcare Informatics Certificate, and Human Caring and Healing Certificate. A certificate bearing the university logo and Colorado state seal is awarded upon request and successful completion of the program. Please download here for an overview on Graduate Certificate Programs.
Our Continuing Education (continuing education contact hours) opportunities include all non-credit, course and program offerings; as we are a Colorado Nurses Association (CNA) approved provider of contact hours of continuing nursing education credit. A Contact Hour is a standardized and nationally recognized unit of measurement that documents successful participation in a professionally organized continuing education learning experience. Those interested in these educational activities, need not be University students. Participants register directly with the organization offering the program and are not recorded with our Registrar’s Office. A grade is not awarded, and there is no transferable academic credit. A certificate is awarded upon request and successful completion of a CNA endorsed program.
Many of the continuing education courses offered by OPDES are developed and offered as professional development courses to support the college’s mission; enhance inclusiveness and diversity; support learner success; and are beneficial recruitment and retention tools for degree seeking students. Examples of these program offerings are: NCLEX Review, GRE Preparation, Spanish Healthcare Terminology, and PhD Boot Camp.
