The Mission of the Office of Research and Extramural Affairs is to support faculty and students in the College of Nursing in all aspects of the development of nursing knowledge from empirical research.  This mission is carried out through (a) consultation for the development of faculty research, (b) facilitation of intramural grants for pilot studies, (c) identification of sources for support of projects, (d) development of grant applications, (e) management of research grants, (f) analysis of data, (g) assistance with dissemination of results, and (h) publication of research activities.

Gwen van Servellen, RN, PhD, FAAN, Interim Associate Dean for Research and Extramural Affairs, directs the Office of Research and Extramural Affairs (OREA).  The faculty and staff of the OREA are committed to providing the College of Nursing faculty and students with the highest standard of service excellence.  Services include research consultation, technical support in research grant production and student fellowship applications; and an intramural program that includes faculty mentoring, small grant support, and editorial consultation.  The OREA is responsible for ensuring integrity in science, assuring that faculty and students adhere to the requirements of the Colorado Multiple Institute Review Board (COMIRB), implementing the UCD policies on Conflict of Interest, and assuring adherence to the UCD research grant and contract policies. Consultation is provided on integrity and ethics in science.

The Center for Nursing Research, which is a service of the Office of Research and Extramural Affairs, was established in 1984 in recognition of the importance of research within the School and to promote standards for conduct of inquiry, generate structures to facilitate investigation, and encourage research and scholarly activity of students and faculty.   Paul Cook, PhD, is director for the Center for Nursing Research.  Staffed with faculty, an administrative assistant, and graduate student RAs, the Center provides research design and analysis consultation, training for faculty and students, and centralized resources such as a reference library and computers with specialized software.
